Durante los a\u00f1os 50, en plena Guerra Fr\u00eda, las pruebas nucleares produjeron un incremento de carbono 14 en la atm\u00f3sfera. A trav\u00e9s de la fotos\u00edntesis, este carbono se incorpor\u00f3 a los vegetales y de ah\u00ed se extendi\u00f3 por toda la cadena tr\u00f3fica. A\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, las pruebas nucleares cesaron y los niveles de carbono 14 volvieron a ser m\u00e1s bajos.\u00a0 Cuando las c\u00e9lulas duplican sus cromosomas, este carbono 14 queda integrado en el genoma, y por tanto constituye un marcador \u00fanico que indica la edad de dichas c\u00e9lulas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seryhumano.com\/web\/?attachment_id=16737\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16737\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16737\" src=\"https:\/\/seryhumano.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/neuronas2.jpg\" alt=\"neuronas2\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a>Los investigadores analizaron por espectrometr\u00eda de masas el carbono 14 de c\u00e9lulas del hipocampo adulto, y llegaron a la conclusi\u00f3n de que cada d\u00eda se producen unas 1.400 neuronas nuevas en nuestro cerebro, y esta tasa va disminuyendo a medida que se envejece. \u201c<em>Durante mucho tiempo se pensaba que nacemos con un n\u00famero determinado de c\u00e9lulas cerebrales, y que es imposible generar nuevas neuronas despu\u00e9s de nacer<\/em>\u201d, ha explicado Jonas Fris\u00e9n, uno de los autores. \u201c<em>Despu\u00e9s se empez\u00f3 a pensar que existe cierta tasa de renuevo, pero no se sab\u00eda en qu\u00e9 cantidad, ni su importancia para la funci\u00f3n cerebral.
