Esta fecha, marcada en el calendario para\ntoda la comunidad irlandesa, cada vez llega a m\u00e1s partes del mundo. Y es que\ndesde el siglo XIX, muchos irlandeses han emigrado y han exportado sus\ntradiciones. \u00bfQuieres saber qui\u00e9n era San Patricio?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Su\nverdadero nombre era Maewyn Succat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maewyn Succat, el nombre original de San Patricio, naci\u00f3 en\nel a\u00f1o 387 en Beenhaven Taberniae (Escocia). Su padre era un oficial romano\ncristiano. Cuando era adolescente, Maewyn fue secuestrado por unos piratas, que\nlo llevaron a Irlanda y lo obligaron a trabajar como esclavo en el pastoreo de\nanimales. Tras conseguir escapar y mudarse a Francia, sinti\u00f3 la llamada divina\ny decidi\u00f3 regresar de nuevo a Irlanda, el lugar donde hab\u00eda sido sometido, para\nliberar a sus captores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Una\ncatedral donde bautizaba a los paganos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De nuevo en la isla, fue predicando el catolicismo,\nconstruyendo iglesias y siendo poco a poco m\u00e1s popular. Cuenta la leyenda que\nla catedral de Dubl\u00edn se erige precisamente en el sitio en el que hab\u00eda un pozo\nque San Patricio utilizaba para bautizar a quienes se convert\u00edan al\ncatolicismo. Tambi\u00e9n se dice que consigui\u00f3 ahuyentar a las serpientes de\nIrlanda. Y que se val\u00eda de un tr\u00e9bol para explicar a quien le escuchaba qu\u00e9 es\nla Sant\u00edsima Trinidad. De ah\u00ed salen los s\u00edmbolos m\u00e1s populares de esta\nfestividad: las serpientes y el tr\u00e9bol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muri\u00f3 en el a\u00f1o 461 y fue enterrado en Sa\u00fal (Stragford\nLough), el lugar en el que hab\u00eda construido su primera iglesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Desfiles\ne iluminaci\u00f3n verde<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grandes desfiles recorren Irlanda para conmemorar a San\nPatricio. El de Wexford comenz\u00f3 en 1917 y solo se interrumpi\u00f3 durante la\nSegunda Guerra Mundial. El de Dunmanway, en el condado de Cork, cuenta con\nveh\u00edculos y tractores que dan color al evento, y el de Galway, en la costa\noeste, atrae a unas 50.000 personas cada a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pero no solo hay desfiles en Irlanda. Tambi\u00e9n en Nueva\nYork, donde el 17 de marzo de 1762 un grupo de soldados irlandeses alistados en\nel Ej\u00e9rcito brit\u00e1nico comenzaron a marchar por las calles de la ciudad, que\nentonces era un territorio colonial, e instauraron una tradici\u00f3n que a\u00fan\npervive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>San Patricio tambi\u00e9n es conmemorado en lugares como\nChicago, Boston, Toronto, Mosc\u00fa, Argentina, Australia, Suiza o Jap\u00f3n.
