Ankara se opone al t\u00e9rmino de genocidio y asegura que una guerra civil\nen Anatolia acompa\u00f1ada de una hambruna fue la responsable de la muerte de entre\n300.000 y 500.000 armenios y de otros tantos turcos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, el Imperio otomano era\naliado de Alemania y del Imperio austroh\u00fangaro. En cuanto empez\u00f3 a sufrir\nnumerosas bajas en los combates en las provincias armenias, ech\u00f3 la culpa de\nello a los armenios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El 24 de abril de 1915 se detuvo a miles de armenios bajo\nsospechas de que eran hostiles al gobierno central. El 26 de mayo, una ley\nespecial autoriz\u00f3 las deportaciones \u00ab<em>por\nmotivos de seguridad interior\u00bb,<\/em> y el 13 de septiembre otra ley orden\u00f3\nla confiscaci\u00f3n de sus bienes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La poblaci\u00f3n armenia de Anatolia y Cilicia (regi\u00f3n que pas\u00f3\na formar parte de Turqu\u00eda en 1921), considerada un \u00ab<em>enemigo interior\u00bb,<\/em> fue enviada en exilio hacia los desiertos\nde la Mesopotamia turca. Muchos de ellos fueron abatidos cuando viajaban o en\nsus campamentos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murieron quemados vivos, ahogados, envenenados o por el\ntifus, seg\u00fan informes de diplom\u00e1ticos extranjeros y de agentes de inteligencia\nde entonces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El 30 de octubre de 1918, el Imperio otomano se rindi\u00f3 a\nlas fuerzas de la Triple Entente (Reino Unido, Rusia y Francia). Fue\ndesmantelado en 1920.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turqu\u00eda reconoce que hubo matanzas y que muchos armenios\nmurieron cuando eran deportados. Pero afirma que fue una represi\u00f3n contra una\npoblaci\u00f3n culpable de colaboracionismo con el enemigo ruso durante la Primera\nGuerra Mundial, y que decenas de miles de turcos murieron a manos de los\narmenios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A d\u00eda de hoy, m\u00e1s de una veintena de pa\u00edses reconocen el\ngenocidio armenio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uruguay fue el primer pa\u00eds del mundo en reconocerlo, en 1965.
