Para escapar de los pogromos, los padres huyeron al oeste con Mascha y su hermana menor Lea en 1914. El padre fue internado como ciudadano ruso, y cuando fue liberado en 1918 despu\u00e9s del final de la Primera Guerra Mundial, la familia se mud\u00f3 a Berl\u00edn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mascha Kal\u00e9ko finalmente se sinti\u00f3 como en casa all\u00ed.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despu\u00e9s de su temprano \u00e9xito con poemas en la tradici\u00f3n de Heine y Tucholsky, los nazis obligaron a Mascha Kal\u00e9ko a renunciar a su tierra natal y a su carrera. Conoc\u00eda el sentimiento de forastera desde peque\u00f1a, cuando su familia lleg\u00f3 a Alemania desde la _ para aquel entonces_ pobre Galicia. Sin embargo, se adapt\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente y pronto domin\u00f3 a la perfecci\u00f3n el dialecto de Berl\u00edn, como muestran sus primeros poemas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tras cursar sus estudios en la escuela, trabaj\u00f3 como secretaria desde los 16 a\u00f1os y proces\u00f3 sus experiencias en sus primeros poemas encantadores y originales, que aparecieron por primera vez en los peri\u00f3dicos y luego con Rowohlt bajo los t\u00edtulos <strong>Das lyrische Stenogrammheft<\/strong> (1933) <strong>y Das kleine Lesebuch f\u00fcr Gro\u00dfe<\/strong> (1935). Las canciones de Kal\u00e9ko tuvieron tanto \u00e9xito debido a su inusual combinaci\u00f3n de descaro berlin\u00e9s y la calidez y melancol\u00eda de los jud\u00edos orientales que fueron interpretadas por ella y por cantantes de chanson, como Claire Waldoff y Rosa Valetti en la radio y en cabarets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-heading\"><strong>Despu\u00e9s de que fueron prohibidos por los nazis, las canciones fueron copiadas y distribuidas en secreto.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1928 se cas\u00f3 con el periodista y fil\u00f3logo Saul Kal\u00e9ko. Desde 1929 public\u00f3 poemas en peri\u00f3dicos antes de que Rowohlt Verlag publicara su primer libro <strong>Das lyrische Stenogrammheft<\/strong> en 1933.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El segundo, <strong>Small Reader for Adults<\/strong>, se inici\u00f3 en 1934, pero poco despu\u00e9s, en 1935, Mascha Kal\u00e9ko fue expulsada del Reichsschrifttumskammer y sus libros ya no se pudieron vender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A esto le sigui\u00f3 el exilio en Estados Unidos. En septiembre de 1938, la poeta emigr\u00f3 a la ciudad de Nueva York con su segundo marido, Chemjo Vinaver, y su hijo Steven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1945 se public\u00f3 el volumen <strong>Verse f\u00fcr Zeitgenossen<\/strong> en Cambridge, Estados Unidos, como uno de los pocos vol\u00famenes de poes\u00eda que se publicaron en alem\u00e1n en ese momento en Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En enero de 1956, Mascha Kal\u00e9ko inici\u00f3 su primer viaje a Alemania despu\u00e9s de la guerra. Ese a\u00f1o Rowohlt Verlag public\u00f3 una nueva edici\u00f3n de los <strong>Lyrische Stenogrammhefts<\/strong> en r\u00fastica y en 1958 aparecieron all\u00ed sus poemas del exilio <strong>Verse f\u00fcr Zeitgenossen<\/strong> en una edici\u00f3n revisada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1959, los Kal\u00e9ko-Vinavers se trasladaron a Jerusal\u00e9n, donde la poetisa nunca se sinti\u00f3 realmente como en casa. En julio de 1968, Mascha Kal\u00e9ko sufri\u00f3 un duro golpe del destino: su hijo Steven muri\u00f3 inesperadamente con tan solo 31 a\u00f1os. Los padres nunca se recuperaron de eso. Despu\u00e9s de una larga y grave enfermedad, el marido de Mascha Kal\u00e9ko, Chemjo Vinaver, muri\u00f3 en 1973.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En el verano de 1974, la poeta inici\u00f3 su \u00faltimo viaje a Europa, del que no pudo volver a casa por motivos de salud. Mascha Kal\u00e9ko muri\u00f3 el 21 de enero de 1975 en una cl\u00ednica de Z\u00farich.
