Dirk Sostman, presidente del Instituto Acad\u00e9mico del <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/\">Hospital Houston Methodist<\/a> nos explica qu\u00e9, \u201cEl desarrollo de una vacuna comienza con estudios precl\u00ednicos en un laboratorio, donde los investigadores prueban la vacuna candidata en modelos celulares y animales para determinar si \u00e9sta puede estimular con \u00e9xito una respuesta inmune y si es segura. Si tiene un buen rendimiento en las pruebas precl\u00ednicas, los investigadores pueden trasladar la candidata a ensayos cl\u00ednicos\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Un ensayo cl\u00ednico se requiere para validar si la vacuna candidata contra el COVID-19 es eficaz y segura para su uso en personas. El experto nos describe las fases de un ensayo cl\u00ednico t\u00edpico para vacunas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Estudio de fase 1<\/strong>: estudio de seguridad inicial en el que la candidata a vacuna es administrada a un peque\u00f1o grupo de personas para comprobar si es segura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Estudio de fase 2<\/strong>: incluye a m\u00e1s personas y se utiliza para evaluar a\u00fan m\u00e1s la seguridad, identificar los posibles efectos secundarios, determinar la dosis adecuada y evaluar la fuerza de la respuesta inmune correspondiente. Para acelerar un estudio, las dos primeras fases a veces se combinan como una prueba de Fase 1\/2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Estudio de fase 3<\/strong>: abarca a miles de personas de diferentes edades, datos demogr\u00e1ficos y ubicaciones, para determinar cu\u00e1ntas personas vacunadas contraen COVID-19, en comparaci\u00f3n con los participantes que no est\u00e1n vacunados (conocido como el grupo placebo). Los resultados indican qu\u00e9 tan efectiva es la vacuna para reducir la infecci\u00f3n (eficacia). La mayor\u00eda de las vacunas candidatas contra el COVID-19 ya se encuentran en esta fase del estudio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Una vez finalizadas las tres fases, las autoridades reguladoras de cada pa\u00eds revisan los resultados del ensayo y decidir\u00e1n si aprueban la candidata a vacuna contra el COVID-19, para su uso generalizado en la poblaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La agencia reguladora de Estados Unidos, la FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s, anunci\u00f3 que una vacuna contra el COVID-19 deber\u00e1 \u00abprevenir la enfermedad (o disminuir su gravedad) en al menos el 50% de las personas vacunadas\u00bb, para ser considerada efectiva. Al momento las vacunas de Pfizer y Moderna han probado ser 95% efectivas, lo cual son muy buenas noticias para el mundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEn general, el progreso que los investigadores de todo el mundo han logrado para desarrollar y probar una vacuna contra el COVID-19 es realmente sorprendente.
