M\u00e1ximo Manso, protagonista y narrador del relato, es un modesto profesor de filosof\u00eda, enamorado del idealismo alem\u00e1n, que pretende la perfecta formaci\u00f3n de un joven, Manolito Pe\u00f1a, m\u00e1s listo que s\u00f3lido. Y solamente consigue convertirle en un brillante y superficial orador pol\u00edtico de \u00e9xito que, adem\u00e1s, le birla a la muchacha de la que el viejo profesor estaba secretamente enamorado.
